Week in Review: City Projects Near $1B Budget Shortfall for 2025; CPS Students Return to School

Summer is over and school is back in session with challenges for students as well as city leaders.

Those challenges include finding enough buses so that all students can get to class. Perhaps the biggest test for CPS will be trying to stay within budget amid ongoing contract negotiations with the Chicago Teachers Union.

Mayor Brandon Johnson will also have to do some serious math to close a projected city deficit of almost $1 billion for the 2025 fiscal year. That has some folks wondering whether Johnson will have no choice but to break his previous promise not to hike property taxes.

Meanwhile, in the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz appear to have pulled even and possibly even ahead of former President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance in key battleground states, according to the latest polls.
